Topsy Turvy Times of Cockamamie Mumbo-Jumbo, 2009. 84 x 144 inches.

The Clayton Brothers open a much anticipated show in Los Angeles tomorrow, July 18. Judging by the large mixed media on canvas works shown here, we expect the duo to unleash an ambitious exhibit, which slated to fill both the east and west spaces at Patrick Painter Gallery’s Bergamot Station location. This one is not to be missed.

The Claytons are also scheduled for their first major museum exhibition at the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art in Wisconsin. Rob and Christian Clayton: Inside Out will run from Sept. 10 – Dec 19, 2010.

Dave Ellis for Spread

We just noticed these new advertisements for Spread, a new movie starring Ashton Kutcher and Anne Heche, going up around NYC. The sound waves looked all too familiar and upon further digging, we’ve confirmed that Dave Ellis was commissioned to design a set of three promotional posters for the film. If you aren’t already familiar with Ellis’ work, stop what you are doing and go here.

The international advertising campaign takes quite a different approach. Unfortunately, judging by the trailer, it seems a bit closer to what the movie really is – a rip off of 80s comedy Loverboy. For your amusement, we share it with you below.

Mogan Lehman Delivers a Superfine Show for Summer

eric-beltz-morgan-lehman
Eric Beltz – Deep Shit, 2009 (detail)

On view now at Morgan Lehman is Superfine, a group show open through August 7. Dual readings of the summer exhibit’s title, are equally appropriate.  First, in one form or another, all the artists in Superfine employ a hyper concentrated focus on miniscule details. Second, the quality of work suggested by the name is just that – super fine.

Eric Beltz continues to impress with a new graphite illustration dense in religious and historical symbolism. We are left pondering words like “where carcasses are, eagles will gather” – a phrase uttered by Jesus in Matthew 24:28 that has been interpreted as a reference to judgment day and the resurrection. It was also a proverb concerning corrupt government written written by Benjamin Franklin in his Poor Richard’s Almanac. The intertwining of religion and colonial history is further complicated with imagery of a Native American siting over a dead body, cradling his decapitated, scalped head, eagles circling above. Perhaps Beltz is alluding to a judgment day for our nation. The title of the piece, Deep Shit, certainly suggest as much.

Other artists incuded are:  Joseph Ayers, Iona Rozeal Brown, Paul Chiappe, Linn Meyers, Tom Molloy, Aaron Noble, Hilary Pecis, Julia Randall, Katia Santibanez, Andrew Schoultz, Rachel Thorlby, Aya Uekawa, Ryan Wallace, and Michael Waugh.

Os Gemos Finish NYC Mural with Dedication to Dash Snow

With a dedication to the late Dash Snow, Os Gemos completed their new mural in New York’s Lower East Side last night. The twins’ memorial borrows a fittingly bittersweet line from the Neil Young classic Powderfinger. “Think Of Me As The One You Never Figured,” reads the inscription, suggesting the song’s final verse:

Shelter me from the powder and the finger
Cover me with the thought that pulled the trigger
Think of me as one you’d never figured
Would fade away so young
With so much left undone
Remember me to my love,
I know I’ll miss her.

TAC extends a heartfelt thanks to Otavio and Gustavo for their beautiful addition to the city and tribute to a lost artist.

Read on for our extensive photo gallery of the completed mural, and check here for our coverage of the early stages. Read the rest of this entry »

R.I.P. Dash Snow

Dash Snow, a rising star in the decadent downtown New York art scene, was found dead in the Lafayette House hotel on Monday night from an apparent heroin overdose. He was 27. Snow seemed on the verge of wider success and notoriety, with representation by Peres Projects, exhibition credits including the 2006 Whitney Biennial, Saatchi Gallery, and London Royal Academy, not to mention a notoriously candid cover story in New York Magazine.  Snow is survived by his two year old daughter, Secret.

Rest in Peace.

Police have arrested three individuals in the UK for conducting a counterfeit Banksy print operation, as well as selling fake Vivienne Westwood and Malcolm McLaren designed clothing at auction. A statement issued by the Metropolitan Police identifies the accused trio as Lee Parker, Grant Champkins-Howard and Vesna Grandes-Howard, who face charges of fraud and money laundering. The crimes have ignited a firestorm on several online art discussion boards, where investigators are attempting to reach out to victims.

The statement encourages “anyone who has purchased ‘Banksy limited edition’ prints (except if bought directly from Pictures On Walls) or ‘Banksy back door’  prints in the past three years” to contact DC Ian Lawson by telephone at +44 (0)20 7230 2150 or email via Ian.Lawson@met.police.uk

Get Over It at Show & Tell, Toronto

greg-lamarche-show-and-tell

Greg Lamarche – Risk, Reward, 2009. Paper Collage.

Get Over It, on view at Show and Tell Gallery in Toronto, features the art of Steve Powers, Greg Lamarche, and Greg Gossel. While the show successfully groups these artists together along the themes of typography and iconography, Lamarche’s contributions strike us the most.  Powers’ are largely remainders from previous exhibitions with V1 and Collette, and Gossel’s again seems too familiar, which may not bother a new and unfamiliar audience. Read on for images from the show.
