Kaws X Kiehls Arrives

(All Images © Jeff Newman/TheArtCollectors)
Check out these new displays featuring KAWS’ designs at Kiehl’s flagship NYC store. As previously reported, the artist and luxury beauty company have teamed up, creating a limited edition moisturizer to benefit Rx Art. While the product is available now in three sizes, you may want to hold off till next week when KAWS gift boxes and shopping bags will be available in store.
100% of net profits will benefit RxArt, a New York based nonprofit which invites well known artists to decorate hospitals and children’s medical centers. No word yet whether KAWS will be creating one of these installations, but his youthful imagery and cartoon references would be perfect fit.

Bodega is a new company focused on creating a curated selection of large scale, eco-friendly, die-cut adhesive vinyl art. With Barry McGee, Rostarr, Mike Giant, and Cleon Peterson amongst their first contributing artists, they are certainly off to an impressive start. Launched by the people behind Monument Snowboards, who have also built a reputation for impressive art curation, we expect to see exciting things as Bodega develops. A few designs went on sale online this week via Arkitip, and are also being distributed to several specialty shops including The New Museum (NYC) and Colette (Paris). Simply awesome.

Pop Will Eat Itself – Tate Modern’s New Exhibit Explores the Art of Branding

Keith Haring - Pop Shop (Image: © Keith Haring artwork © Estate of Keith Haring. Photo: Charles Dolfi-Michels.)
The early pop-art that emerged in the late 50s and early 60s was as much a critique as it was a celebration of a new post WWII consumer culture hyped up by industry and government during the height of the Cold War. Since then, pop artists have taken their commentaries on capitalism beyond the incorporation of mass media imagery, employing modes of commercial production and sometimes becoming brands themselves. Pop Life: Art in a Material World, a new exhibition at Tate Modern, surveys pop artists of the last three decades who have embraced not only mass media, but mass production and commerce. The exhibit is highlighted by works from Andy Warhol, Jeff Koons, selections from Damien Hirst’s self-promoted 2008 Sotheby’s auction, a newly commissioned installation by Takashi Murakami, and a recreation of Keith Haring’s NY Pop-Shop. The museum has also opened a special Pop Life Boutique, with select products available online.

Daniel Johnston’s Jeremiah Now an iPhone Game
Cult musician and artist Daniel Johnston can now add iPhone app to his growing list of commercial endeavors. The 99¢ Hi How Are You game lets players navigate Johnston’s iconic Jeremiah the Frog through a series of 27 levels, accompanied by his songs. We couldn’t resist giving it a try and must admit – it’s actually quite fun whether you are a Johnston fan or not. Download it from iTunes here
This certainly isn’t the first time Jeremiah has been used for commercial products. In the past few years the character has been licensed to numerous products including vinyl figures (yes, developed by yours truly), a line of Medicom backpacks and accessories, and countless t-shirt designs as accessible as your nearest Urban Outfitters. Earlier this month Activision released the Guitar Hero 5 video game, featuring an avatar of former Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain sporting a Jeremiah t-shirt.
