12 Inches of Eric White

GetTheKnack

NY based painter Eric White has garnered much praise for his impecable technical skill, coupled with a near astounding ability to seemlessly navigate multiple artistic styles. For LP, an upcoming exhibit at Sloan Fine Art (NY), White will present series of 12 x 12 paintings based on album covers that pay tribute to the artistic influences in his life, while stirring up nosalgia for a  lost art form. This is White’s second exhibit exploring the LP theme. The first took place this past June at Magda Danysz in Paris

cleon-peterson-1

Cleon Peterson opens his first show in Brussles at Alice Gallery this Saturday, Sept. 12. For Unconsoled, the Los Angeles based artist continues to portray violent yet playful depictions of an anarchic dystopia,  exploring the dangers imminent in a pleasure seeking society consumed by excess and indulgence.

Over the past few years Peterson has gained considerable attention for his paintings, as well as for graphic design work with Shepard Fairey’s Studio Number One, where he recently designed shopping bags for upscale clothing retailer, Saks Fifth Avenue.

Kenny Scharf’s Barberadise @ Honor Fraser Gallery

Photos by Joshua White.

LA’s Honor Fraser Gallery is hosting Kenny Scharf’s Barberadise, opening September 12. Scharf has been on a fierce upswing in his career and the work rendered for this exhibition proves to be an emphatic return to prominence. His take on classic characters produced by Hanna Barbera is set amidst world annihilation. Venturing to paint his delirious vision of The Flintsones to The Jetsons, Scharf is appealing to a broad yet discerning spectrum. Barberadise is not only comical and fun but marks the opportunity for LA collectors to appreciate a rare solo show by an inspired, well-established artist.

Deitch Kicks Off Fall Season with Wiley + Auerbach

Back after a bit of a much needed break, and eager for Deitch Projects to jump-start the fall season with two shows we anticipate being equally powerful and vastly different.

Kehinde WileyBlack Light will showcase a series of seventeen new photographs by the artist. While the exhibit offers new insight into a practice that has long been part of his creative process, Black Light is new ground for Wiley, who has become extremely successful for his brightly- colored figurative paintings of modern urban Black males, appropriated into the style of Old Masters and Western portraiture. Wiley’s new photo series is also the subject of a new monograph, published by powerHouse and available now.

Opening the same night is Tauba Auerbach’s Here And Now/And Nowhere. The title, an intentional anagram, reflects Auerbach’s obsession with the collapse of organized systems, and the mingling between the two conflicting states of order and chaos. Expect to see painting, photography, sculpture, and an interactive sound instrument that showcases an artist more interested in mastery of concept than medium.

The gallery will open a thirds exhibition on Sept. 10, at their Long Island City warehouse space. The Open will feature works by 31 emerging artists, including Scott Campell, Abigail DeVille, Keltie Ferris, and  Deitch director, Kathy Grayson.

Mike Shinoda’s Glorious Excess (Dies)

shinoda1

LA’s Japanese American National Museum is now hosting a prodigious art exhibition by Mike Shinoda entitled Glorious Excess (Dies). The massive creative effort is a pivotal point in the career of the young artist, as he establishes himself outside of his work in music. Shinoda’s adroit use of all types of media to channel his voice is remarkable. The show signals the artist’s ability to create his vision in a plethora of mediums, including digital platforms. It’s clear that the concept of the exhibition has been thoughtfully embedded into each rendition. It’s not too early to opine that Glorious Excess (Dies) provides one the year’s most memorable moments. On view until October 4.

Making Something from Nothing :: Beautiful Losers Released in UK, Inspires London Exhibit

If you are reading this, chances are you are already familiar with Beautiful Losers, the traveling art exhibit turned documentary film celebrating a group of artists who emerged out of New York’s Alleged Gallery in the early 90s, joined together by the DIY aesthetics of punk rock, hip-hop and skateboarding. The marks of artists like Barry McGee, Shepard Fairey, Geoff McFetridge, Mike Mills and Harmonie Korine are widely acknowledged in popular art, design, film, and fashion. Now, a new exhibition in London takes up the Beautiful Losers calling to “Make Something From Nothing,” featuring a group of emerging UK artists.

DIY London Seen, an exhibition documenting the work of, and inspired by the artists featured in the film, opened today, coinciding with Beautiful ‘Losers UK DVD release and run at the London Institute of Contemporary Arts. Organized by Watch This Space, the show features a group of young London artists whose work embodies the spirit of the film, alongside the photography of original Loser, Cheryl Dunn, and Ivory Serra, who documented the rise of the Beautiful Losers’ artists throughout the 90s.  DIY London Seen runs August 17 –  September 5 at  2009 at The Market Building in Covent Garden.

Quality Art Still Sells :: Joshua Liner’s Summer Show

James Roper

The current mantra being echoed in auction house halls and on dealers’ calls is that despite the slowdown in art buying, there is still a strong audience and market for quality works of art.  As the dust settles over the mediocre, Joshua Liner further proves which side of the fence he falls on with the opening of an overwhelmingly strong show this past Saturday.  Liner’s Summer Group Exhibition includes many well-known painters, highlighted by Radioheads’ longtime visual guru, Stanley Downwood, Greg Craola Simkins, and Dave Kinsey, along with some very recognizable younger talents who have gained fast followings, like Chloe Early (who also shows with London’s Stolen Space) and Cleon Peterson (a member of Shepard Fairey’s Studio Number One design team).

Equally deserving are some of the lesser known bold new additions to the gallery including James Roper, Ryan McLennan and Tristram Lansdowne. Not surprising, there was a noticeable buzz amongst the crowd, who shared in the refreshing excitement of such a vast and impressive lineup. And with many of the works already sold, there’s proof that collectors will still open their wallets for undeniably and irresistibly good art.

Island Hopping with Dalek

3DC6643B0339151F99567821975B797C

After recently completing his largest free-standing piece to date, commissioned for the opening of Hurley’s new Laguna Beach store, Dalek (James Marshall) now finds himself in Hawaii, taking a week to prepare new work for the upcoming show, 2D: The Art of 2Day, at SoHo Mixed Media Bar. Images from both events (courtesy of Hurley and Curatedmag) provide an insightful look into Dalek’s creative and technical process.

2D: The Art of 2Day opens Friday, August 7, during First Friday Art Walk in Honolulu. In conjunction with the event Dalek and event sponsor In4mation have created a limited edition t-shirt and print, with proceeds benefiting The Contemporary Museum of Honolulu, the only museum in Hawaii devoted exclusively to contemporary art.

Next up for Dalek will be a UK exhibit at the influential Elms Lester’s Painting Rooms in London with Amsterdam-based artist, Delta. The show opens August 28 and runs to September 26.
