Warhol Athlete Series Stolen

Warhol-Theft-Weisman
(Via: Los Angeles Police Department)

A series of 10 unique prints from Warhol’s well-known Athlete Series were stolen earlier this month from the Los Angeles residence of collector Richard Weisman. A commissioned portrait of Weisman was also taken in the theft.

While other color versions of the print edition depicting sports icons of the 1970s exist, Weisman’s are arguably the most significant. It was at his request that Warhol created the series, and in turn the artist requested Wesiman to hand pick the ten athletes, many who he knew personally. The works have been heavily on loan over the past few years, appearing in exhibitions at the Crocker Art Museum (Sacramento, CA) in 2008 and the University of Oregon’s Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art in 2006.

In 2006 Wesiman noted, “I felt that putting this series together was a natural in that two of the most popular leisure time activities at that time were sports and art, yet to my knowledge they had no direct connection,” Weisman said. “I therefore thought that having Andy Warhol do the series would inspire people who loved sports to come into galleries, maybe for the first time, and people who liked art would take their first look at a sports superstar.”

A one million dollar reward is being offered for information leading to the recovery of the works of art.

Modern Tradition :: Tony Curanaj at John Pence Gallery

tony-curanaj-1

For the past decade Tony Curanaj, better know in graffiti cirlces as SUB, has been diligently dedicating himself to a mastery of realist painting that has more in common with Renaissance humanism than popular street aesthetics. After earning his BFA from the School of Visual Arts in 1995, Curanaj honed his craft at the prestigious Water Street Atelier, a highly selective four year studio program steeped in the tradition of realism.  From there, Curanaj became a founding member and core teacher at the Grand Central Academy, which evolved from the original the WSA.  Curanaj’s paintings reflect the disciplined hand of a classical painter thrust into a modern world, and are on view now through Oct. 10 in a new solo exhibit at John Pence Gallery (San Francisco). Not to be missed.

GetTheKnack
Get the Knack, 2009. 12″ x 12,” oil on panel

NY based painter Eric White has garnered much praise for his impecable technical skill, coupled with a near astounding ability to seemlessly navigate multiple artistic styles. For LP, an upcoming exhibit at Sloan Fine Art (NY), White will present series of 12 x 12 paintings based on album covers that pay tribute to the artistic influences in his life, while stirring up nosalgia for a  lost art form. This is White’s second exhibit exploring the LP theme. The first took place this past June at Magda Danysz in Paris

Just in,  D*Face has put the final touches on a new mural located in New York’s Lower East Side. Along with his new body of paintings, the outdoor piece features a dense mash-up of pop imagery, throwing recognizable corporate mascots, logos and comic characters into hyper abstraction. The wall coincides with Ludovico Aversion Therapy / All Your Dreams Belong To Us, the London based street artist’s eagerly awaited second solo exhibit with Jonathan LeVine. The gallery will announce the mural’s exact location this coming Monday. Until, then, enjoy our exclusive pics and happy hunting!

We’ve also spotted these proper advertisements for the show around town.
