AIKO launches Love Monster, a new solo exhibit of mixed media works, at Joshua Liner Gallery, this Saturday, April 18. Shawn Mortensen R.I.P.
Los Angeles, CA. 1965-2009.
It’s a very sad moment, having to say goodbye to a wonderful, tremendously talented person, let alone a friend. Shawn Mortensen is pictured here, dedicating one of his books to me at his home, just weeks ago. I had just acquired his polaroid of KAWS from the Honor Fraser opening for my collection. Such a brilliant photographer. He will be deeply missed. All our condolences to his family.

Spotlight :: Eric Fortune @ LeBasse Projects
It’s not every day we spotlight a new artist, but Eric Fortune is eminently worthy of mention. In the recent past, Eric has been making excellent forward progress with his fine art career. With contributions to shows in several galleries, his most substantial offering to date is now up at LeBasse Projects, in a sold-out exhibition entitled “Lost In Light”. His renditions are sublime, with extremely adroit technique – products of an arduous process. We interviewed Eric about the present moment in his art and much more. Read on for our exchange with one of our favorite new voices:

Phil Frost in “Hadiith”
Phil Frost’s seminal collection in “Hadiith”, presented by KRUNK at Cuadro Fine Art Gallery in Dubai, is the culmination of years of laborious, methodical effort.
Frost’s signature correction fluid patterns appear as expected on canvas and baseball bat installations, yet it’s evident that an evolution has taken place. His highly personal stylized technique is pushed to mind-boggling proportions with large-scale works.
Ethereal layers of found paper are collaged on canvas and wood. Comics and newspapers are among the intricate elements involved in this painstaking process. The eye-popping details can only be appreciated up close.
There is an escalating ambition tempered by deliberate patience in Frost’s renditions. It’s not so unimaginable that it takes remarkably long to produce each and every piece, sometimes several years inside his studio.
Frost’s statement in this historic exhibition is resoundingly loud. Without hesitation, the paintings loudly proclaim his place in the pantheon of urban art – a titan in his own right, alongside the other legends in “Hadiith” – Futura and Stash. Most of all, the soulful heart Frost pounds into every inch is palpable across the entire collection.
The photos that follow are some of Frost’s virtuoso contribution to exhibition, presently on display at Cuadro.

Banksy Bollocks
Vandalized vandalism – Banksy mural vandalized by Appropriate Media in Bristol, UK.
Image: Appropriate Media
The Times London (by way of Art Market Monitor) clues us in to a group calling themselves Appropriate Media, who have vandalized a protected Banksy mural located in Bristol and published the below anti-Banksy/street art mission statement on a their website:
“In the early hours of this morning, Banksy’s ‘Mild Mild West’ on Stokes Croft in Bristol (UK) was repainted by a member of Appropriate Media, presenting an alternative version of this ‘alternative Bristol landmark’.
Through this action, Appropriate Media asks ?What is the value of street art??. How much time and money will be spent to restore this urban ‘masterpiss’ by urban masterpisser, Banksy.
Come on, you only care about it cos its a Banksy and he sells his lazy polemics to Hollywood movie stars for big bucks.
Come on, you only care about it cos makes you feel edgy and urban to tour round the inner city in your 4×4, taking in the tired coffee table subversion that graffiti has become.
Graffiti artists are the copywriters for the capitalist created phenomenon of urban art.
Graffiti artists are the performing spray-can monkeys for gentrification.
We call for the appropriate and legitimate use of public and private property…We are taking matters into our own hands…We will not seek permission…We will retaliate”
Hm – doesn’t it seem a bit late for this?
