Sao Palo::Choque Cultural Vandalized by Pixadores

A few weeks old, but somehow missed our TACdar…

For some time now, many state-side art enthusaists have been keeping an eye on Sao Palo Brazil’s Choque Cultural Gallery.  Since 2004, Choque has built a strong reputation with the growing popularity of its roster of underground Brazilian artists.  Apparently, not all are pleased. Last month, a group of 30 Pixadores overwhelmed the gallery, relentlessly tagging both art and walls in an act of protest against the “marketing, institutionalization and domestication of Street Art.”

Wooster Collective, which had initially reported the incident with little commentary, later issued a statement, condemning the act and clarifying their outright support for Choque Cultural. Read the full statement here and read on for more images of the vandalism.
