Andrew Schoultz @ Roberts + Tilton

Andrew Schoultz (detail)

Andrew Schoultz brings us a tremendous scope of work in his latest solo show White Noise and Silence: New Paintings and Drawings at Roberts & Tilton.  For the San Francisco-based artist’s second exhibition with the gallery, Schoultz creates chaotic muralistic paintings, but with an ironically subdued and hopeful nature.  In this new body of work, Schoultz addresses notions of blind trust and national public complacency. Several of the works are layered with tones of transparent white paint that push the turbulent imagery into the background, symbolizing a disruptive future under a mask of hope and calm.  The paintings effectively mimic contemporary politics and public affairs, and simultaneously mirror the need for spiritual beliefs in times of suffering.  Initially they appear more minimal than Schoultz’s previous work; however, the overlying surface serenity is in consideration of what is looming in the background. In contrast, other works are painted black, appearing as night landscapes.  The ominous scenes express calmness but suggest that we are on the verge of the unknown and potentially dangerous, and the uncertainty of it is eerie and uncomfortable.  Like relics of history, these works have roots in the past but are relevant to the future.  Even in a drastically changing world, religious, spiritual, and holy rituals are preserved.  Although these works reference monuments, tombs, and sacred places, what they are monuments to, tombs of, and why they are sacred is left unknown. Andrew Schoultz recently exhibited at Chelsea Visits Havana, Cuba, and received the 2009 Commission Award from House of Campari, which will be on display through June 14, 2009 in Los Angeles.

Bansky’s Bristol Show Revealed

Today, Banksy unveiled the secret show he had eluded to on his website earlier this week. The artist’s largest exhibit to date, Banksy Versus Bristol Museum, opens to the public in his hometown at the City Museum and Art Gallery. The show features over 70 new works, as well as some familiar ones, including animatronics that were first seen at Banksy’s Village Pet Shop in New York last year. “This is the first show I’ve done where taxpayers’ money is being used to hang my pictures up rather than scrape them off,” said the artist in a statement (AP). The show is free and runs through August 31. In the meantime, check out the video tour below, and see more pics via BBC

Fourth Owner of Hirst Skull Outed

hirst-skull

As you may recall, shortly after unveiling Hirst’s For the Love of God in 2007, White  Cube Gallery reported that the $100 million diamond emblazoned skull had in fact sold to a private investment group for the initial asking price. It didn’t take long for details to surface – to date, Hirst, along with his business manager Frank Dunphy and White Cube’s Jay Jopling are the majority owners.

Now, The Art Newspaper reports that Russian billionaire Viktor Pinchuk was recently outed by the Washington Post as a fourth part-owner of the skull. No wonder he is currently hosting a major Hirst retrospective at his own Pinchuk Art Centre in Kiev.

Employee Steals $600K+ from Brooklyn Museum

brooklyn-museum

The NY Times reports that a former payroll manager for the Brooklyn Museum stole over $620,000 from the already strapped institution by creating fake payroll profiles with the names “Brooklyn Museum” and “Brooklyn,” which he then issued paychecks to and syphened into his personal bank account. The former employee, Dwight Newton, 40, is out on bond and faces up to 20 years if convicted for wire fraud.

As if the crime wasn’t shameful enough, it was just two months ago that the Times reported the museum was cutting salaries and raising admission fees to avoid layoffs and make up for a drastically depleted endowment, which, in addition to a 32% cut in city funding , has shrunk nearly 70% since last year, from 93.1 million to 65 million.

Feeling philanthropic? – Make a tax-deductible donation to the museum’s fund here

San Francisco based artist Andrew Schoultz is gearing up for a new solo show at Roberts and Tilton in Los Angeles.  Schoultz’s work is strongest on a grand scale, when space permits his seamless incorporation of individual paintings and drawings into larger murals and sculptural installations. With full reign over R+T’s sizable main gallery, expect to see the artist at his best. Keep an eye on this one.
