Mogan Lehman Delivers a Superfine Show for Summer

Eric Beltz – Deep Shit, 2009 (detail)

On view now at Morgan Lehman is Superfine, a group show open through August 7. Dual readings of the summer exhibit’s title, are equally appropriate.  First, in one form or another, all the artists in Superfine employ a hyper concentrated focus on miniscule details. Second, the quality of work suggested by the name is just that – super fine.

Eric Beltz continues to impress with a new graphite illustration dense in religious and historical symbolism. We are left pondering words like “where carcasses are, eagles will gather” – a phrase uttered by Jesus in Matthew 24:28 that has been interpreted as a reference to judgment day and the resurrection. It was also a proverb concerning corrupt government written written by Benjamin Franklin in his Poor Richard’s Almanac. The intertwining of religion and colonial history is further complicated with imagery of a Native American siting over a dead body, cradling his decapitated, scalped head, eagles circling above. Perhaps Beltz is alluding to a judgment day for our nation. The title of the piece, Deep Shit, certainly suggest as much.

Other artists incuded are:  Joseph Ayers, Iona Rozeal Brown, Paul Chiappe, Linn Meyers, Tom Molloy, Aaron Noble, Hilary Pecis, Julia Randall, Katia Santibanez, Andrew Schoultz, Rachel Thorlby, Aya Uekawa, Ryan Wallace, and Michael Waugh.

Read on for the rest of our images from opening night.
