Must See::Jim Houser at White Walls SF

We previously told you about Awful MountainJim Houser and Richard Colman’s upcoming joint show at White Walls in San Francisco. Here are some wonderful shots the gallery sent over (thanks goes out to Jeff Luger) of Jim working on his installation, as well as some of the individual pieces available.

Jim’s installations are fantastically inspirational, and he possesses the unique ability to create an environment that is at once warm and welcoming, yet thought provoking an densely layered. Through his use of reoccurring characters, symbols, and text, Jim has created a language and ongoing narrative that is distinctly his own, and represents a form of pure artistic and emotional expression that is often void from much contemporary illustrative art today. Simply put, he is one of our favorite working artists. Read on for more images of the installation in progress.

Opening: Nov. 1, 7 – 11pm
White Walls SF

Kehinde Wiley – Down

Kehinde Wiley’s new solo show opens tomorrow at Deitch Projects. For Down, Wiley will present seven new monolithic canvases, spanning up to twenty-five feet in length and representing his largest works to date.

For his third solo exhibition with Deitch Projects, “Wiley re-conceptualizes classic pictorial forms to create a contemporary version of monumental portraiture…Described by Wiley, Down is ‘an answer to the negative views of young Black men in American society. It recognizes an idiom that can be seen from a distance as a negative form transformed into something more fabulous and joyful…’ ” (excerpted from press release)

The new show opens in the wake of Wiley’s last New York exhibit, World Stage: Africa, Lagos-Dakar (previously reported),  at the Studio Museum in Harlem, which closed last week and will travel to ArtPace in San Antonio, TX this coming January.

Nov. 1 – Dec. 20

Market Watch::The London Barometer

Many collectors and investors have been keeping a close eye on London’s recent contemporary auctions, as a sign of how badly the market has been impacted by the ongoing global financial crisis. The Art Market Monitor has published an informative analysis, which indicates a few significant trends. Overall, net proceeds from contemporary auctions of the past year have experienced a significant decline, yet when compared alongside results from 2005 – 2008, the average price for works sold at auction has steadily risen. Lastly, the number of lots sold has continually fallen over the course of the past two years, with a more dramatic decline seen in recent months, between the July and most recent October auctions.  Read on for more analysis. Emmanuel Perrotin to show Damien Hirst

Damien Hirst “When Logics Die,” at Emmanuel Perrotin, 1991. Image: Andre Morin

After bypassing traditional gallery representation with his Sotheby’s auction, news has surfaced that Damien Hirst will reignite his relationship with Parisian gallery, Emmanuel Perrotin, who in 1991, was one of the first two dealers to exhibit the artist. A solo exhibition is slated for 2010, and neither Hirst nor Perrotin have indicated if this a sign of a larger relationship.

KAWS – New Painting Update #2

Looks like KAWS just updated his blog right after we published our last post, so here are two bits of news on the artist in a row, presented to you just as soon as we got word of them. Here, KAWS shows off more new paintings, while a CBS news crew (including former MTV VJ Serena Altschul) visited his studio to film an upcoming segment on his art. KAWS’ Family Guy Painting

A little while back we heard some rumblings of KAWS rendering the Family Guy characters, and now the word is officially out. Once again, the lucky owner seems to be Pharrell Williams, who was also behind commissioning the first Smurf and Spongebob paintings from the artist.  Here are the photos Pharrell dropped on his blog yesterday. Is this a sign of things to come at KAWS’ upcoming New York solo show?

Say Goodbye to Banksy

London’s Westminster City Council has ordered Banksy’s “One Nation Under CCTV” mural to be removed from the wall it has resided on since appearing last April. The vote was justified by Deputy Council Leader, Robert Davis, who said, “we are not saying the owners need to paint over this mural as we can see it has value in the right location, such as an art gallery…We simply want it removed from this wall and the owner is perfectly entitled to remove it and sell it if they wish.” He went on to add “I take the view that this is graffiti and if you condone this then what is the difference between this and all the other graffiti you see scrawled across the city?…If you condone this then you condone graffiti all over London.”

With any luck, the 23 foot high piece will get painted over, and not excavated and auctioned. Let’s hope Mr. Banksy takes care of it himself….
