Recap :: The Wynwood Walls

The Wynwood business district has quickly become the hub activity with the presence of Pulse and Scope, two of the most established international art fairs, the headquarters of world-renknown private collections including those of the Rubell Family and George Margulies, to more grassroots endeavors like the Fountain Art Fair, and Murals.
This year, Deitch projects returned to the mix with the Wynwood Walls, an open-air installation of murals by an international mix of artists (most know for their outdoor art and graffiti) including Aiko, Shepard Fairey, Jim Drain with Ara Peterson, Stelios Faitakis, Futura, Barry McGee, Nunca, Os Gemeos, Clare Rojas, Kenny Scharf, and Swoon with David Ellis and Ben Wolf. An additional indoor presentation included photos by Martha Cooper, taken during the creation of the walls, as well as a scattered and sparse mix of works by Swoon, Os Gemeos, Ryan McGinness, Chris Johanson, and Black Acid Co-Op.

Amongst the stand out contributions were NY graffiti pioneer, Futura, who delivered a fantastic and unexpected abstract mural, setting himself apart from a predictable display of largely figurative walls. Barry McGee was fortunate enough to have superior real estate, with free reign over an entire corner building located several blocks from the main site. Wrapped in a day-glo green and orange geometric pattern, the site commanded attention even after the smoke settled from the flipped, burning truck that ignited opening night air.
While the exhibit succeeded in bringing together a talented and varied roster, it fell short on capturing the excitement and vitality of public art, due in part to some lackluster individual contributions, coupled with confinement in an enclosed lot, rather than being incorporated into the landscape of the Wynwood streets.
