NYC::David Byrne – Playing the Building
Ex-Talking Head and now conceptual artist, David Byrne, has transformed the interior of New York City’s Battery Maritime Building into an interactive instrument and sound installation. Presented by Creative Time, Playing the Building, invites visitors to a play away on a pump organ, triggering simple electric motors, which in turn vibrate steel girters, strike cast iron pillars and blow air through pipes, producing a naturally amplified and fully interactive ambient sound-scape. Our hat’s off to Mr. Byrne and Creative Time for reviving the landmark structure. Located in lower Manhattan, the hundred year old Battery Maritime Building functioned as a Brooklyn ferry terminal from 1909 until 1938. However, in recent years it has wasted away as a storage space (dumpster) for city Department of transportation files. Last year a $110 million private development plan was approved, so visit now before the boutique hotel and rooftop restaurant are slapped on top. On view Fri, Sat, Sun till August 24th.
