Kenny Scharf’s Barberadise @ Honor Fraser Gallery

Photos by Joshua White.

LA’s Honor Fraser Gallery is hosting Kenny Scharf’s Barberadise, opening September 12. Scharf has been on a fierce upswing in his career and the work rendered for this exhibition proves to be an emphatic return to prominence. His take on classic characters produced by Hanna Barbera is set amidst world annihilation. Venturing to paint his delirious vision of The Flintsones to The Jetsons, Scharf is appealing to a broad yet discerning spectrum. Barberadise is not only comical and fun but marks the opportunity for LA collectors to appreciate a rare solo show by an inspired, well-established artist.

Mike Shinoda’s Glorious Excess (Dies)

shinoda1

LA’s Japanese American National Museum is now hosting a prodigious art exhibition by Mike Shinoda entitled Glorious Excess (Dies). The massive creative effort is a pivotal point in the career of the young artist, as he establishes himself outside of his work in music. Shinoda’s adroit use of all types of media to channel his voice is remarkable. The show signals the artist’s ability to create his vision in a plethora of mediums, including digital platforms. It’s clear that the concept of the exhibition has been thoughtfully embedded into each rendition. It’s not too early to opine that Glorious Excess (Dies) provides one the year’s most memorable moments. On view until October 4.

Urban Deconstruction @ Guy Hepner Contemporary

Limited Time Only, KAWS. 2006.

KAWS, Limited Time Only, 2006.

Art showman and prominent dealer, Guy Hepner, is hosting a unique show of 6 paintings by the icons of ‘urban’ art, KAWS, Mr. Brainwash and Bansky. Opening August 24, the show is historically relevant, bringing three globally significant artists together from private collections in one gallery. If you have not stopped by and experienced Hepner’s new Robertson location, this is the perfect opportunity to get acquainted. Following Urban Deconstruction, Hepner is mounting a solo show by photographer Russell Young. KAWS’ grandiose Limited Time Only, an acrylic on canvas rendition, features an homage to Goya with the disruption of his witches from the 18th Century masterpiece entitled ‘Linda Maestra, Plate 68 of Los Caprichos’.

Regen Projects presents a series of new works by famed conceptual artist Lawrence Weiner with the show PLACED ON THE TIP OF A WAVE.  Not surprisingly, the work of the same name beautifully adorns the white wall outside of Regen Project’s second gallery space on Santa Monica Blvd (Weiner has utilized the exterior of the gallery for previous shows as well).  The exhibit runs until August 15, 2009.

For those of you in the Los Angeles area, Peres Projects presents its summer group show Minneapolis, running July 2 until August 29, 2009.

According to the gallery’s press release, “Minneapolis is a city in the Midwestern United States, known for its high rate of literacy and racially tolerant atmosphere. In many respects it is the ideal American city, where coexisting cultures thrive, and in turn breed successive generations of even more creative, talented inhabitants. ‘Minneapolis’ considers the implications of Minneapolis, its legacy and impact on everyone who has never been there.”

While Javier Peres is widely recognized for cultivating the careers of hot young superstars Dan Colen, Terrence Koh, and Dash Snow (who are all included in the show), Minneapolis takes the opportunity to showcase some of the lesser known, but equally captivating artists in gallery’s stable, including Mark Tichner, Paul Lee, Amie Dicke, Dan Attoe, Mark Flood, Kirstine Roepstorff, John Kleckner, Kaye Donachie, and Joe Bradley. As a whole, the show reveals the depth of talent represented by Peres Projects, and it is perfect for anyone looking for an introduction to a gallery that the rest of the art world just can’t seem to get enough of.

Andrew Schoultz @ Roberts + Tilton

andrew_schoultz_detail

Andrew Schoultz (detail)

Andrew Schoultz brings us a tremendous scope of work in his latest solo show White Noise and Silence: New Paintings and Drawings at Roberts & Tilton.  For the San Francisco-based artist’s second exhibition with the gallery, Schoultz creates chaotic muralistic paintings, but with an ironically subdued and hopeful nature.  In this new body of work, Schoultz addresses notions of blind trust and national public complacency. Several of the works are layered with tones of transparent white paint that push the turbulent imagery into the background, symbolizing a disruptive future under a mask of hope and calm.  The paintings effectively mimic contemporary politics and public affairs, and simultaneously mirror the need for spiritual beliefs in times of suffering.  Initially they appear more minimal than Schoultz’s previous work; however, the overlying surface serenity is in consideration of what is looming in the background. In contrast, other works are painted black, appearing as night landscapes.  The ominous scenes express calmness but suggest that we are on the verge of the unknown and potentially dangerous, and the uncertainty of it is eerie and uncomfortable.  Like relics of history, these works have roots in the past but are relevant to the future.  Even in a drastically changing world, religious, spiritual, and holy rituals are preserved.  Although these works reference monuments, tombs, and sacred places, what they are monuments to, tombs of, and why they are sacred is left unknown. Andrew Schoultz recently exhibited at Chelsea Visits Havana, Cuba, and received the 2009 Commission Award from House of Campari, which will be on display through June 14, 2009 in Los Angeles.

San Francisco based artist Andrew Schoultz is gearing up for a new solo show at Roberts and Tilton in Los Angeles.  Schoultz’s work is strongest on a grand scale, when space permits his seamless incorporation of individual paintings and drawings into larger murals and sculptural installations. With full reign over R+T’s sizable main gallery, expect to see the artist at his best. Keep an eye on this one.
