Bobby Hutton Benefit Featuring McGee, Swoon + more

The Bobby Hutton Memorial Benefit art exhibit opens tomorrow, Nov. 29, at the Luggage Store in San Francisco. Hutton was amongst the earliest members of the Black Panther Party, who lost his life at the age of 16 during a 1968 confrontation with police.  Proceeds from the show (not auction) will help fund the completion of a memorial sculpture which will be placed in Oakland California’s (the birthplace of the Panthers) De Fremery Park.

The exhibit includes works for sale by Barry McGee, Swoon, Rigo 23, Andrew Schoultz, Date Farmers, Monica Canilao, and many others. The Luggage Store opening will be followed by a party at On Six Gallery, and will feature a performance by Digital Underground.

Here’s a brief biography of Hutton, courtesy of Babylon Falling:

For those of you who might be familiar with the name but not the story, Lil’ Bobby Hutton was the first member of the Black Panther Party and was also the first Party member murdered by the police. Having joined the Panthers as a 15 year old, by the time of his death in 1968 (just two weeks shy of turning 17) Lil’ Bobby was the Treasurer of a rapidly growing organization. Although the circumstances leading up to the confrontation that resulted in his death are the subject of dispute, there is no confusion over the fact that members of the Oakland and Emeryville Police Departments gunned down (12 shots, the first to the head at point blank range) an unarmed black teenager who had surrendered and was in their custody. His murder was the catalyst that increased the urgency and the intensity of the implementation of the Black Panther Party platform.

Recap::ABC NO RIO Benefit Art Auction & Gala

Last night, the magnificent Angel Orensanz Foundation hosted a benefit to raise funds for non-profit artist center, ABC NO RIO, who is in crucial need of relocation.  For many of us, our first experiences with ABC were as teenagers, coming to their punk/hardcore Saturday matinee shows. However, for nearly three decades, this independent collective has been so much more.  Since the early 80s ABC, has been a staple in New York’s Lower East Side artist community, hosting independent theater, music, artist workshops and programming. While there were some highly notable donated works, including pieces by Swoon, Tom Otterness, Crash, and Kiki Smith, the true stars of the evening were an array of burlesque performers and the eclectic Hungry March Band. Read on for more pics of the incredible space and highly entertaining evening. Benefit featuring Swoon, McGee, Faile, ESPO + more

Transformazium, a non profit artist group including Swoon, is holding a benefit to raise funds for the further development of Points of Interest, a public arts programs in Braddock, PA. Braddock is considered an impoverished community, with little economic or job opportunity, high crime, and according to the 2000 census, an average family income of $20,000.  The event takes begins at 4pm tomorrow, Saturday, Oct. 11, at Secret Project Robot in Brooklyn, NY. It includes screenings about the Braddock community, a barbeque, and an art auction with works by Swoon, Barry McGee, Faile, Steve Powers, Bast, Aiko, Kiki Smith and many more.  Below is an abridged version of Transformazium’s Points of Interest mission statement. Do something good and go spend some money this weekend…

“Points of Interest responds to a perceived need for reinvestment in underutilized and neglected public spaces in Braddock and North Braddock…Integral to the project are several community forums, at which we will ask residents to give us their perspective on the areas of their neighborhood that are ripe for redefinition. The joint work of our asking for insight, and the community members’ considered response will begin the process of creating new structures for valuation…The thought, energy, care and memory of the community “insiders” with whom we collaborate, in combination with the time and talent of the visiting artists, is intended to lead to an active re-assessment of the neighborhood as a living thing, capable of being affected by individual and community effort…The invited artists will be working for a week in Braddock and North Braddock with teen facilitators from the area. Their visible presence is part of our intention to make the installation of artwork transparent and accessible…We acknowledge that art often has a relationship with priviledge. We ask: is it possible to subvert that relationship so that the addition of artwork in an area considered blighted can empower an individual or community to feel privileged to imagine change and to enact it?”

NYC::Guerilla Philanthropy

This is fantastic. Spearheaded by artist Steve Lambert, a group calling themselves The Federation of Students and Nominally or Unemployed Artists handed out $1000 in on the spot, instant grants in NY’s Union Square. In the team’s own words, the FSNUA “aims to re-inspire creative thinking and action in everyday people be removing a small barrier and providing encouragement. We give small, unsecured grants in the form of $10-$60 for creative projects thought up on the spot by everyday people.” How does it work? Each of the 10 members raised $100 in cash and then convened with a makeshift grant proposal office in the park, where recipients lined up, proposed their ideas, and walked away with certificate and cash in-hand. New York needs more stuff like this…
