Steve Powers Sends Love to Philadelphia

steve-powers-love-letter

This August Steve Powers returns to his Philadelphia roots, unveiling “Love Letter,” an ambitious 20-block long mural project. According to Powers, the large scale piece was conceived as a “love letter spanning 50 walls and roof tops to be painted in West Philadelphia facing the Market-Frankford Elevated train. The letter is meant for one with meaning for all, and in a larger sense, will be for West Philly from West Philly.” The outdoor installation is being realized with the help of local residents who are being taught the art of sign painting at a temporary school set up by Powers. To complement Love Letter a short film is being produced by Ghost Robot (whose production credits include three Sundance awards for The Station Agent, as well as Stoked: The Rise and Fall of Gator).

The entire endeavor is made possible with a grant awarded to The Mural Arts Program by The Philadelphia Exhibitions Initiative, a program funded by The Pew Center for Arts and Heritage, who join a growing list of organizations facilitating and legitimizing Powers’ vital contributions to the public landscape. In 2005 Creative Time backed the Dreamland Artist Club and again lent support for the Waterboard Thrill Ride in 2008 – the same year Powers was awarded a Fulbright grant for a six-month project in Ireland.

Jim Houser in Milan

jim-houser-milan-1

Philadelphia based artist and founding member of  Space 1026, Jim Houser, opens The Tip of The Sword, his first solo exhibit in Italy, on July 1 at Milan’s Galeria Patricia Armocida. We’ve been vocal about our admiration for Houser’s instantly recognizable visual narratives and folk-inspired installations. If you are in the Milan area, this one’s not to be missed. Here’s a couple of images of new works.

Barney + Peyton Collaboration Surfaces

barney-peyton-deste-1

Blood of Two, the highly secretive collaboration between Matthew Barney and Elizabeth Peyton, was unveiled this past Tuesday as part of the inauguration of Deste Foundation’s Slaughterouse, a new satellite exhibit space located on the Greek island of Hydra. At dawn, a largely notable crowd gathered seaside and watched as local fishermen pulled a glass sarcophagus containing Barney and Peyton’s artifacts from the water, and slowly ushered it up the cliffs to its final resting place within the former slaughterhouse. As expected of Barney, the rest of the ceremony was drenched in cryptic symbolism, including a dead shark and goat herders. Check out The Moment for the full recap.

FAILE Strikes Again

faile-totem-2

FAILE are at it again. The duo have installed yet another public totem on the streets of Brooklyn, despite the quick theft of the first piece last month. Chances are this one won’t last much longer…and is that a newspaper box knocked over to make room?

Thanks to The World’s Best Ever for the tip and Luna Park for the first images.

Steve Powers Gets Drunk on the Lord

steve-powers-church-of-open-tab-1

Just in are these new images from 2 Fists of Iron and a Bottle of BeerSteve Powers’ current exhibit at White Flag Projects (previewed here) in St. Louis. Along with his crew of “Studio Gangsters,” Powers has constructed The Church of the Open Tab -part chapel, part bar – where the church altar is replaced by a jukebox and stained glass-like panels of troubled, iconic sinners from the world of music serve as saints and our connection to the divine. More to come (we hope).

McGee, Rojas, Wright at New Image

clare-rojas-barry-mcgeenew-image-1

Barry McGee, Clare Rojas and Andrew Jeffrey Wright opened American Realities at New Image Art this past Saturday, March 28th. While the cohesive nature of the group installation is indicative of their close professional and personal relationships, the show does not stand out as the strongest individual output by any of the three artists. yoshitomo-nara-14

Yoshitomo Nara launched a new New York exhibition this past Saturday, at Marianne Boesky Gallery. As expected, the show serves up a playful mix of drawings and paintings at recession-resistant price points ranging from $18,000 to $500,000.  The most ambitious works are two large-scale sculptural dwellings, done in partnership with his design team, graf, who Nara began collaborating with in 2003. The evening was topped off with live music by Orutaichi, M.A.G.O., and a performance by Yo La Tengo side-project, Dump. Read on for our extensive photo recap and click images for larger views. Win a Swoon, Make a Hippy Happy

swoon

To help raise funds for her ambitious new undertaking, Swimming Cities of SerenissimaSwoon is raffling off an original work on wood. All proceeds will go towards realizing this grand vision, comprised of a fleet of hand-made vessels that will set sail on the Adriatic Sea, from Slovenia to Venice, Italy.

Raffle tickets are $30 each, and contestants may purchase multiple entries until March 25th. The winner will be announced March 26th. Go get them here

If you’re not already convinced, take a moment to read this letter from Swoon:

Last year, with a team of about 75 friends, crew, and collaborators, I built a flotilla of rafts out of salvaged bits of New York City. Our precarious floating home traveled 140 miles south along the Hudson River. What left as the refuse of the city’s mega construction returned as six vessels trying to encompass a whole world (the seventh died along the way).

This year, with some of those same vessels, and some new, we begin the second leg of our journey. Our destination? It’s the city whose outrageous countenance, rising straight up out of the ocean like that was a fine sort of thing for a city to do, was our original inspiration. Yes ma’am, we’re headed across the Adriatic Sea toward our first love, Venice.

This year we are a crew of 35, all artists, musicians, crackerjack mechanics, and folks who specialize in big, impossible, ridiculous dreams. We will put on a performance and cobble together a cabinet of wonders. We will, in our form, be working on themes of recycling and reuse, considering the footprint of a human community on the planet, and on issues of climate change. We have not found a solution to floods and sinking cities or where to go next, but we know that it’s important to us to create art and community at the same time as we seek a different relationship to our world.

We are starting in the Karst region of Slovenia (a former forest barren to this day after its large trees were cut for pilings in Venice), and skirting the northern coast of the Adriatic. For fun and a little mischief, we will be crashing the Venice Biennale.

Since we are doing all of this in an otherwise collapsed economy we need lots of help. It’s a big project that we are trying to fund with the help of many small contributions from people who would like to be involved and help us get these crafts afloat — even if you just think we’re cheeky and want to see if we’ll sink. This raffle is just one of the many ways we’re trying to get back on the water.
