Island Hopping with Dalek

3DC6643B0339151F99567821975B797C

After recently completing his largest free-standing piece to date, commissioned for the opening of Hurley’s new Laguna Beach store, Dalek (James Marshall) now finds himself in Hawaii, taking a week to prepare new work for the upcoming show, 2D: The Art of 2Day, at SoHo Mixed Media Bar. Images from both events (courtesy of Hurley and Curatedmag) provide an insightful look into Dalek’s creative and technical process.

2D: The Art of 2Day opens Friday, August 7, during First Friday Art Walk in Honolulu. In conjunction with the event Dalek and event sponsor In4mation have created a limited edition t-shirt and print, with proceeds benefiting The Contemporary Museum of Honolulu, the only museum in Hawaii devoted exclusively to contemporary art.

Next up for Dalek will be a UK exhibit at the influential Elms Lester’s Painting Rooms in London with Amsterdam-based artist, Delta. The show opens August 28 and runs to September 26.

Os Gemos Finish NYC Mural with Dedication to Dash Snow

With a dedication to the late Dash Snow, Os Gemos completed their new mural in New York’s Lower East Side last night. The twins’ memorial borrows a fittingly bittersweet line from the Neil Young classic Powderfinger. “Think Of Me As The One You Never Figured,” reads the inscription, suggesting the song’s final verse:

Shelter me from the powder and the finger
Cover me with the thought that pulled the trigger
Think of me as one you’d never figured
Would fade away so young
With so much left undone
Remember me to my love,
I know I’ll miss her.

TAC extends a heartfelt thanks to Otavio and Gustavo for their beautiful addition to the city and tribute to a lost artist.

Read on for our extensive photo gallery of the completed mural, and check here for our coverage of the early stages. Read the rest of this entry »

Os Gemeos New York Mural – Day1

os-gemeos-ny-mural-14

Summertime in the Lower East Side has just gotten a little brighter. Os Gemeos have descended on New York and have set up shop on the corner of Houston and Bowery. The brothers from Sao Pãulo were invited by Deitch Projects to create a public mural at the now former site of the Keith Haring tribute wall. The project is still in its beggining stages, with today marking the first full day of production.

Though the twins did leave their mark in the streets while prepping last year’s unforgettable exhibit with Deitch, this is their first large-scale legal commission in the city since making a spectacular contribution to Coney Island as part of Creative Time’s Dreamland Artist Club.

Expect to see the duo at work over the next week and perhaps stop by with an offering of a cold beverage. Read on for our images of the early stages, taken throughout the first day and click for larger views. More to come…. Read the rest of this entry »

Magda Danysz Launches Shanghai Gallery, Exhibits JonOne

jonone-18gallery

Parisian gallery Magda Danysz celebrates its 10 year anniversary with the launch of 18Gallery, a new exhibition space in Shanghai. To commemorate the occasion both galleries are hosting solo shows by JonOne, one of the earliest NY writers to import graffiti to Paris, when he relocate there at the end of the 1980s. Since then his art has gained widespread popularity and is arguably more well known in France and throughout Europe than back here in the States.  His Shanghai show is already underway and the Paris exhibit launches this Saturday, July 4.

Read on for more images from the 18Gallery opening and a video interview with JonOne. Read the rest of this entry »

Opening Night NYC w/ WK + Invader

wk-invader

WK Interact and Space Invader proved their continual popularity as signature-hungry fans fought through the packed opening night crowd for joint solo shows with Jonathan LeVine this past Saturday.

WK’s Motion Portrait presents recent large acrylic on canvas paintings, as well as his well known mixed media and wheat-pasted doors. While several of these works were presented at the Aqua Art Fair during Art Basel Miami last December, the newer motion portrait series does represent a welcome departure for the artists, in both subject and form.

The focus of Invader’s Top 10 is the artists signature Rubik’s Cube mash-ups, this time reworking 10 classic album covers including the Beatles, Velvet Underground, Sex Pistols, Clash and yes, even Iron Maiden. We were most intrigued by Invader’s use of digital technology, in which the artist created a black and white tile mosaic that can be read by smartphone cameras, in turn triggering a time-lapsed Quicktime video of Invader constructing one of his pieces. Magic? – not really. The piece utilizes QR coding (think barcode) that points to a specific URL.

Shows run till July 25. Read on for our extensive photo recap. Read the rest of this entry »
