TAC Focus :: Shepard Fairey in Miami
Obama campaign art propagandist and GQ Man of the Year, Shepard Fairey, was a stand out hit at last week’s SCOPE Art Fair in Miami. Presented by Jonathan Levine Gallery, Fairey exhibited a substantial body of new work, ranging from extremely affordable small album covers to three $25,000 large scale wall installations (Two of these were the only pieces still available at the close of the fair.) Those not attending the indoor fair weren’t forgotten. Shepard also took time out to keep to his roots and hit the streets of Miami. Lucky we were able to capture images before All City Crew’s rampage. By the end of the weekend, the Brooklyn graffiti crew had tagged up virtually all outdoor works. SCOPE Fair::TAC Focus – Matzu + Aiko at Joshua Liner Gallery
One of the stand out exhibits at this year’s SCOPE Art Fair Miami was delivered by Joshua Liner Gallery, who displayed a bold body of large works by New York based Japanese artists Aiko Nakagawa and Tomokazu Matsuyama. Aiko’s mixed-media stencil, serigraph, spray paint, and collage self portrait canvases indicate an increasing self awareness and confidence, while Matzu’s acrylic canvases poetically explore notions of cultural identity and bicultural heritage, drawing upon popular Japanese icons and modern graphic design. Art Basel::TAC Focus – Deitch Projects
Swoon
As usual, Deitch Projects exhibited a powerful display at Art Basel Miami. On view were substantial works by a selection of their represented artists, including Swoon, Kehinde Wiley, Os Gemeos, and Ryan McGinness. In addition the gallery showed four large scale paintings by modern master, Francesco Clemente, who exhibited with Deitch in 2007. Read on for more and click images for detailed views. TAC Focus :: Art Basel – Mark Ryden
Mark Ryden unveiled this impressive new painting with Tomio Koyama Gallery’s at Art Basel Miami. Price tag – a modest $800,000. Art Basel Miami Recap – Part 1

The Art Collectors presents the first installment of our extensive coverage of Art Basel Miami and its surrounding satellite fairs.
Undoubtedly there was a significant downturn to the feverish buying frenzy of the boom of the past several years. Although there was less spending and decadence in the air, overall, spirits remained hopeful as the week progressed.
Reporting for the Times London, Sarah Thornton describes the five-day affair as yet another measure of a market that has “slowed down dramatically but averted a crash, mainly as a result of the skilful driving of dealers and the return of serious collectors who were ‘priced out of the market’ during the boom by fast and high-spending billionaires,” and a somber tone of “deep relief, as there were enough transactions at the fair to demonstrate that art is still a liquid asset.” (full story here)
The less that disasterous slump was substantiated by a Miami Herald survey of 86 galleries and dealers – 41 exhibiting at Basel, and another 45 from satellite fairs. Over 70 percent experienced flat or slight decreases in prices. The Herald notes that this does not account for reports of major discounting. Half reported smaller crowds and less potential buyers. Even with these somewhat bleak reports, 60 percent of exhibitors surveyed were ”extremely likely” to return next year. (full story here)
Despite the overall somber tone, crowds flocked to view a massive mix of established heavyweights and up-and-coming stars of international modern and contemporary art. NY Art Book Fair
The New York Art Book Fair runs this weekend, Friday, Oct 24. – Sunday, Oct. 26, at Phillips de Pury, making a visit pretty easy for those planning on attending this weeks Saturday @ Phillips auction. The free event, sponsored by Printed Matter, includes more than 140 international exhibitors including publishers and sellers of contemporary art books, catalogs, artist books and zines. The Art Collectors looks forward to checking out PictureBox, Ooga Booga, and Nieves, who who will host a signing of Taylor McKimens’ new artist book, Some Kind of Livin’, at 2pm on Saturday.
