Paul J Kneale @ Studio Gallery

paul_kneale_show_poster_for_no_one

In a new site-un-specific project conceived for Toronto’s Studio Gallery, Paul J Kneale explores the change between inform and form in a work that is both installation and event. Drawing on the familiar to create a psychologically dissonant experience, the work positions its subject at the threshold of our process of expressing meaning through material. For No One opens August 13th:

Andrew Jeffrey Wright Is a Stand Up Guy

andrew-jeffrey-wright-comedy-tour

Andrew Jeffrey Wright and friends are on on the road this week, taking their off kilter blend of art-comedy to several east coast galleries. Hopefully their jokes are better than our title puns. If you can make it out to one of these performances, don’t miss the chance. AJW’s own testimonials certainly have us convinced:

“It is going to be so funny you will forget to laugh!”

“So last night we performed at Thanky Space in Richmond VA. Great gallery and great people. One of the worst shows I’ve ever had ever. So obviously it has been the worst show of the tour, but so far it has been the only show of the tour, therefore it has also been the best show of the tour so far! See how that works? Stay positive!?! See you 2nite in Baltimore! love, ajw”

Here’s the remaining dates. See some of you in Brooklyn.

Echigo-Tsumari’s Rural Wonderland

Echigo-Tsumari-Triennial

The Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennial opened last week across the rural landscape of Niigata prefecture in central Japan, approximately two hours from Tokyo. The fourth edition of the festival, which began ten years ago, brings together more than 350 works of art, scattered over 470+ miles of communities, rice fields, vacant houses and closed schools. While most of the participating artists are native to Japan, many other nations are represented, spanning Asia, Europe, North and South America, Africa and Australia. In addition to the hundreds of artworks, several special events and performances are scheduled throughout the run of the festival, and as the Guardian’s Danielle Demetriou notes, the world’s largest outdoor art festival has played an important role in revitalizing an otherwise isolated, depopulated region.

The festival runs through September 13. Visitor and travel information can be found here.

Read on for a selection of  ETAT installations, including works by Antony Gormley, Cai Guo Qiang, Christian Boltanski+Jean Kalma, and Stasys + Kolodziejski. Read the rest of this entry »

Taschen Commemorates Julius Shulman

After the passing of Julius Shulman last month, art book publisher, Benedikt Taschen, has published a fitting homage to the hugely influential photographer of Modernist architecture on the Taschen website:

“Julius Shulman was one of the greatest photographers and image makers of the 20th century. Even in a biblical age he was an inspiration for generations of admirers, fans and friends. His house was open for everyone and thousands of pilgrims from all over the world came to see him, the man who created the visual memory of Modernism. He was a generous, kind and caring human being with a memory sharp as the latest generation of computers, recalling every trip he made and every photograph he took. I loved this man and I was blessed to have him as my friend and as a TASCHEN artist.”

Shulman and Taschen’s friendship shines through in this video at the photographer’s Los Angeles home. With the artist now gone, perhaps the best way to remember him is through Taschen’s several invaluable publications, beginning with the now out of print Julius Shulman: Architecture and Its Photography (1998) and continuing with Modernism Rediscovered (2000), which was later expanded to the definitive 2007 three-volume edition. Continuing his commitment to the artist, in 1999 Taschen released a limited edition portfolio set, comprised of 12 different limited edition framed prints, each in an edition of 60, numbered, titled and signed by Shulman. While some are still available on the Taschen site, expect to see a spark in interest.

In 1998 Shulman received a lifetime achievement award from the International Center of Photography in New York. He died on July 15, 2009 at the age of 98.

Writing for the New York Times, Roberta Smith provides the most insightful review we’ve seen of Os Gemeos’ recent Houston Street mural, taking the twins’ spectacular creation beyond its graffiti roots and situating it into a broader context of art history. Well worth a read here.

Island Hopping with Dalek

3DC6643B0339151F99567821975B797C

After recently completing his largest free-standing piece to date, commissioned for the opening of Hurley’s new Laguna Beach store, Dalek (James Marshall) now finds himself in Hawaii, taking a week to prepare new work for the upcoming show, 2D: The Art of 2Day, at SoHo Mixed Media Bar. Images from both events (courtesy of Hurley and Curatedmag) provide an insightful look into Dalek’s creative and technical process.

2D: The Art of 2Day opens Friday, August 7, during First Friday Art Walk in Honolulu. In conjunction with the event Dalek and event sponsor In4mation have created a limited edition t-shirt and print, with proceeds benefiting The Contemporary Museum of Honolulu, the only museum in Hawaii devoted exclusively to contemporary art.

Next up for Dalek will be a UK exhibit at the influential Elms Lester’s Painting Rooms in London with Amsterdam-based artist, Delta. The show opens August 28 and runs to September 26.
