Kehinde Wiley – The World Stage: Africa, Lagos – Dakar

Here’s a peak from Kehinde Wiley’s current exhibit at the Studio Museum In Harlem, where his latest monolithic paintings from the World Stage series are on view. For this body of work, Wiley situated himself in the both Lagos, Nigeria and Darkur, Senegal. Here, he found his models and invited them to pose in positions reflecting local statues and monuments from the African-European colonial period. This is not the first time the Studio Museum has welcomed Wiley. In fact, it was during his 2001 tenure as artist in residence that Wiley first experimented with having his subjects (then picked off the streets of New York) take on historical poses present in classical European portraiture. On view till October 26, 2009, free on Target Free Sundays. More after the jump, click pics for larger images.

BK:: Tod Seelie and Cinders – Slowdancing To Slayer

Slowdancing to Slayer, joins photographer Tod Seelie with arguably Brooklyn’s most relevant gallery. Since opening in 2004, Cinders has successfully maintained its DIY spirit, functioning as a purely artist-run space. While the show marks the first photo exhibit for the gallery, there couldn’t be a more fitting home for Seelie’s counterculture wonder-wasteland. Functioning as a “mini-retrospective” of sorts, the exhibit showcases a broad body of work, and serves as an autobiographical representation of the photographers recent travels, adventures, friendships, and artistic adventures. While some may dismiss images of young punks, seemingly shrugging off responsibility, what will be missed is the celebration of a young community, alive and shaping the world around them. More pics after the jump, better pics on the Cinders site. On view till August 9th – Do not miss this one.

Mark Dean Veca at Ogilvy and Mather

On view now in the New York offices of advertising and creative agency Ogilvy and Mather, is a selection of older works from the archives of artist Mark Dean Veca. Entilted The 90s, the office-space exhibit provides a glimpse into the early progression of some of Veca’s reoccurring themes and deconstruction of popular iconography, such as the Popeye cartoon. The exhibit marks the first of a series of art shows at Ogilvy, where the office will be open for public viewing on the first Thursday evening of each month. All work is for sale via Jonathan Levine Gallery, and can be viewed in person till October 4th, by contacting jun.lee@ogilvy.com

NYC::David Byrne – Playing the Building

Ex-Talking Head and now conceptual artist, David Byrne, has transformed the interior of New York City’s Battery Maritime Building into an interactive instrument and sound installation.  Presented by Creative TimePlaying the Building, invites visitors to a play away on a pump organ, triggering simple electric motors, which in turn vibrate steel girters, strike cast iron pillars and blow air through pipes, producing a naturally amplified and fully interactive ambient sound-scape. Our hat’s off to Mr. Byrne and Creative Time for reviving the landmark structure. Located in lower Manhattan, the hundred year old Battery Maritime Building functioned as a Brooklyn ferry terminal from 1909 until 1938. However, in recent years it has wasted away as a storage space (dumpster) for city Department of transportation files. Last year a $110 million private development plan was approved, so visit now before the boutique hotel and rooftop restaurant are slapped on top. On view Fri, Sat, Sun till August 24th.
