London::Jose Parla at Elms Lesters

Brooklyn based artist Jose Parla’s first London solo show, Adaption / Translation, opens this Friday, Oct. 10th, at Elms Lesters Painting Rooms. To accompany the exhibit, the gallery has published a catalog. Parla will be signing copies Saturday, Oct. 11, from 11am-1pm. Here’s a nice bit excerpted from the press release:

“Jose Parla creates a visual narrative of his experiences in different cities. Through the multilayered, psycho-graphical, calligraphic nature of his work he embeds these stories in his paintings and invites the viewer to discover his visions of the environment. Parla is therefor not just a painter, but a new kind of novelist; a modern storyteller who uses wall gestures, the writing on the wall, and found advertising to reconstruct complex stories and anatomies”

Jose Parla - Adaption / Translation
Oct. 10 - Nov. 8
Book Signing: Oct. 11, 11am - 1pm

Barry McGee Video Interview@ Ratio3

Northern California public television station, KQED, has posted a wonderful new video interview with Barry McGee. Footage was shot at McGee’s current exhibit, A Moment for Reflection: New Works by Lydia Fong, at Ration 3 Gallery in the artist’s home-town of San Francisco. The 7+ minute feature showcases some great views of McGee’s installation and sheds some further light on the transitional phase he seems to be in.

NYC::Now Open - Banksy’s Village Pet Store!!!

Looks like Banksy’s recent outdoor walls were just a sign of more things to come. With no prior announcement, the artist has quietly updated his website, revealing that his latest indoor installation in already open in New York. Disguised as “The Village Pet Store and Charcoal Grill,” the show bares absoltely no marks of the artist or his famously recognizable characteristics, with zero traces of graffiti, painting or stenciling.  Instead, the tiny store front has been converted into a conceptual installation utilizing animatronics to create a bizarre fantasy pet shop that seems better suited for the Twilight Zone than New York’s West Village.

Banksy has posted several teaser videos on both his site and You Tube. You can watch them right here after the jump. The clips suggest this one must be seen in person, so tell your boss you’re sick and go there right now. The location? 89 7th Ave. between Bleeker and West 4th Street. Open to the public 10am-Midnight until Halloween,  Oct. 31.

With surprises like this, and seemingly nothing available to purchase, we wonder what else Sir Banksy has in store for us stateside…
